Joining the ranks of Groundhog Day, President's Day, and Valentine's Day is a recently-founded, completely unofficial, and frankly awesome new midwinter holiday: Galentine's Day! Celebrated on February 13th, it was born as a sitcom episode and has since begun to work its way into popular culture, and not a moment too soon in my opinion! We have all sorts of holidays celebrating lovers, mothers, teachers, fathers, secretaries, you name it... but a holiday strictly devoted to celebrating the importance and value of female friendships has, until now, been nonexistent. Studies show that women with strong female friendships have higher seratonin levels and less stress and live 22 percent longer than those who don't have these bonds. Those of us who have weathered rocky life seasons know that when the going gets tough, more often than not it's your female friends that are the ones actually showing up.
Especially this year, with women's marches reaching record turnout, and a cultural watershed around the 'me too' and 'time's up' movements, women are banding together, supporting each other, and changing the world.
So, why not gather your girls and celebrate each other?
Your Galentine's Day Party in 3 Easy Steps:
1. Hit it Hard with Girly Decorations
Go crazy at the craft store or party supply outlet--- pick up anything and everything pink and sparkly you can find. That way, it somehow all works together. Remember, the goal of this is not to be classy or elegant; the more over-the-top silly the better! Just have fun with it!
2. Make Sure To Stock Up On Card-Making Supplies
Create a station with colorful card stock and pretty pens, so your guests can write thoughtful cards to each other, with love and compliments and heartfelt sentiments and all that great supportive female energy. Everyone will take home a pile of personalized love notes; and incredible souvenir that they can revisit anytime they need an emotional pick-me-up.
3. Snacks, Wine, Snacks and Wine!
No need to get fancy with the food selection: candy and cupcakes is where it's at on Galentine's Day! Somebody can always order up a pizza or some sushi if your girls are craving more 'real' food... but there's something really lighthearted and decadent about a sweet spread. For the wine, I went with rosé for my display... because although chocolate and wine do NOT traditionally pair well (contrary to popular belief!), rosé pretty much pairs with everything. ESPECIALLY if it has bubbles! Cheers Ladies!
